Abuzz for National Pollinator Week!
Did you know that June 20th to June 26th is National Pollinator Week? This is a fantastic opportunity to honor and appreciate the hardworking pollinators that play a vital role in our ecosystem, including bees, butterflies, birds, bats, and other insects. As Idaho boasts diverse landscapes and rich biodiversity, it’s the perfect time to raise awareness about the importance of these tiny creatures and take action to protect them.
Here are three actionable tips on how you can celebrate Pollinator Week in Idaho:
1) Support Local Beekeepers: Purchase honey and other bee-related products from local beekeepers who prioritize the well-being of their bees. By supporting local beekeepers, you contribute to the preservation of bee populations and their vital role in local agriculture pollination.
2) Plant Pollinator-Friendly Gardens: Create a welcoming habitat for pollinators by planting native flowering plants, herbs, and shrubs in your garden or on your balcony. Opt for a diverse range of flowers that bloom throughout the growing season to provide a consistent food source for pollinators. Check out our Nursery & Greenhouse Guides to help you!
3) Learn and Educate: Stay informed about the importance of pollinators and share your knowledge with others. Encourage friends, family, and community members to take action in supporting pollinators through small changes in their own gardens and daily practices. Organizations like Ada Soil & Water Conservation District, with their Pollinator Resources, offer numerous classes throughout the year.
To help do our part, we created the Apiculture Resource page, on our Farm + Food Finder app. Recognizing the crucial role that bees and beekeepers play in our ecosystem and food production, this resource aims to support and promote Idaho’s thriving apiary industry. To learn more, click here.
To help celebrate National Pollinator Week, we turn our focus to Dr. Ron Bitner, a distinguished bee biologist and owner of Bitner Vineyards, located in Idaho’s picturesque Snake River Valley.
Dr. Bitner’s groundbreaking work in sustainable wine production and his unwavering commitment to safeguarding pollinators have solidified his status as a trailblazer in the field (no pun intended!) Dr. Bitner is a visionary figure who not only cultivates exceptional Idaho wine but also acts as a dedicated custodian of our invaluable pollinators. Read the blog post here.
